With winter approaching and the freeze coming it is vital to prepare your home for the winter months. The upfront cost is nothing when you compare it to an emergency plumbing bill. The following steps can be done to help prevent pipes from freezing:
- Wrap all exposed pipes
- Wrap the water heater
- Close or plug all exterior vents to your home
- Shut water off and drain all exterior pipes
By following these steps it will help ensure your pipes do not freeze and run the risk of a broken pipe. All of this material can be found at your locale hardware store for very low cost. This will also help keep your hot water warm ensuring the water wont take to long to heat up for your morning shower and will help reduce the water bill.
If it is to late and the pipes have already broke, it is important the water is shut off immediately to reduce damage. In most cases this can be done at the water heater itself, but if necessary there is a shut off valve located at the street. It will more than likely need to be cleaned from dirt to expose the shut off valve. Once the shut off valve is located turn the water off (you may need to use pliers to get it to move).
To help reduce cost if possible try to call to get the repair done the next day during business hours so there is no emergency or after hour fees added to the bill. In some situations you may need to call several different places due to scheduling a plumber on a short notice situation and understanding this is their busiest time of the year.
As always please feel free to give us a call if you have any questions, we would be happy to assist you by phone or come out personally to help.
We wish you a safe and happy holiday season
